 Naseej Academy Conducts Two Workshops on Big Data as part of SLA–AGC’s 24th Annual Conference & Exhibition

Naseej Academy conducted two workshops on the applications of big data in academic libraries in collaboration with the Special Libraries Association/Arabian Gulf Chapter, as part of SLA–AGC's 24th Annual Conference & Exhibition, held March 4–5, 2018, at Grand Millennium Muscat, Oman.


The first workshop, entitled "Big Data for Strategic Planning and Decision

Making in Academic Libraries", placed particular emphasis on the opportunities and challenges big data represents for academic library managers and information specialists. 


Mr. Scott Leeb, a global expert in knowledge management and technical consulting solutions, moderated the workshop. Attendees included several directors and representatives of information institutions and libraries in the Arab world, among them Sultan Qaboos University (Oman), Saudi Commission for Health Specialties, American University (Kuwait), Ministry of Culture (Tunisia), Princess Sumaya University for Technology (Jordan), and Department of Culture & Tourism National Library (UAE).


The second workshop, "Effective Management of Big Data and Research Data within Academic Libraries", was moderated by Mr. Marshall Breeding, consultant and keynote speaker at several conferences.


The workshop addressed questions of the qualifications and skills required for dealing with big data and research data, how big data and research data are managed, the new roles of academic library staff, and how to protect user privacy.


The workshop was attended by a number of information specialists from the Arab world, including Royal Court Affairs (Oman), Hamad Bin Khalifa University (Qatar), Qatar University, AL-Mustansiriyah University (Iraq), and German University of Technology in Oman.


Eng. Abdullah Al-Tarifi, Executive Vice President of Naseej, who awarded certificates to the participants, emphasized that Naseej Academy's aim in organizing such events is to enhance and support the personal and professional development of library staff, enabling them to stay abreast of innovations, issues and requirements affecting their job performance and their ability to service their customers
