Naseej Academy Organizes its First Workshop for National Libraries in the GCC

Naseej Academy organized its first workshop for senior leaders of national libraries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Titled “National Libraries in the GCC: Developing an Ambitious Yet Practical Vision for the Future”, the workshop was held on October 5–-6, 2016, at ART Rotana Amwaj Islands, Bahrain.

The workshop addressed a number of vital themes, including – but not limited to –  the role of the national library, both nationally and internationally, and the potential constraints on senior librarians’ achievement of their ambitions. A special focus was the opportunities and key issues for national libraries in the knowledge society. In addition, the workshop elaborated on consortia, partnership and collaboration as new ways of working and providing services.

The workshop offered an open forum for sharing insights, views and knowledge, as well as an active platform for collaboration among GCC national library leaders through common programs and projects.

Participants had opportunities for one-to-one meetings with the workshop’s keynote speaker, Mr. Martyn Wade, National Librarian and Chief Executive of the National Library of Scotland (2002–2014), and Chair of the Committee for Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).
