 Professor Dr. Clara M. Chu Leads “Internet of Things (IoT) for Libraries” Workshop

​Naseej Academy, in collaboration with the Special Libraries Association – Arabian Gulf Chapter (SLA–AGC), is pleased to offer a workshop entitled "Internet of Things (IoT) for Libraries". The workshop will be moderated by Professor Clara M. Chu, Director and Mortenson Distinguished Professor at the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and President-Elect, 2018–2019, of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T).

​The workshop will be held on March 3–4, 2019, at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Abu Dhabi, UAE, and will precede the SLA–AGC's 25th Annual Conference & Exhibition.

The workshop will address the concept of Internet of Things, and examine how the different technologies that make up IoT can be used in libraries.

Workshop participants will also gain a general understanding of privacy and security issues, smart speakers and voice computing, and automation with the If This Then That (IFTTT) service.

About Professor Dr. Clara M. Chu

Clara M. Chu is an expert with long experience in:

  • identifying appropriate solutions in the delivery of equitable and relevant library services in culturally diverse and dynamic libraries
  • using emerging technologies to connect and empower communities locally and worldwide
  • assessing the information needs of culturally diverse communities in a globalized and technological society.

 

Dr. Chu publishes, presents and consults worldwide in English and Spanish on library and information science (LIS) education, diversity in LIS, strategic planning, research methods, marketing and promotion of libraries, library trends, and learning and making in libraries, among other topics.

Dr. Chu is active in library and information associations, having served as President of the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), on the Governing Board of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), Co-Chair of the IFLA Building Strong LIS Education Working Group, and as the American Library Association (ALA) representative on the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO.

She is currently serving on the boards of Libri, Library Trends and the International Journal of Information, Diversity, & Inclusion.

​​She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the ALA 2018 Beta Phi Mu Award for distinguished service to education for librarianship, and the ALA 2008 Library Diversity Research Honor and its 2002 Equality Award.
